Back to the Future

It's a very rare day - and I stress the word very - that I miss the ol' Independent. But today is one of 'em.

Because every now and then, that Pink White and Green fed-bashing political pamphlet disguised as a newspaper could offer up a column or a story that made you nod your head in partial agreement, with all that was wrong with Newfoundland politics, past and present.

Like this one, cleverly disguised as an 'arts' story.

"I don’t need you,” said Smallwood. “I’ve been elected, but you need me. I’m sitting on top of the public chest and not one red cent will come out of it unless Greg Power is elected. Unless you vote for my man, you’ll be out in the cold for the next five years. Those settlements which vote against Greg Power will get nothing, absolutely nothing.”

On five separate occasions during the campaign, Smallwood attempted to bully the people by insisting they would not receive “one red cent” if they defied his demands.

It would be curious to see what the Danny Williams cheerleading brigade would be writing today about the current by-election in the Straits, now that their patron saint and saviour is doing (albeit with different verb tenses) the exact same thing.
